This is what I found when I stepped out of the house this morning. Smash and grab, with the only thing of value missing being a 4 year old Garmin GPS. Par for the course for living in the city and having to park on the street, I suppose. I’ve gotten accustomed to the regular sound of gunfire and can tune it out, but attacks like this cost me money - money I don’t have. I wonder what they got for the GPS - two, maybe three vials of crack?
Any suggestions on where to get a replacement window on the cheap? I have yet to see one of these 2012+ Mazda5s in my local junkyards, so I guess I’ll have to go retail. If Mazda wants $36 for the little plastic disc that covers the tow hook socket on the front bumper, I suppose that the cost of a window will be enough to total out the car. The first snowfall of the season is supposed to hit tomorrow, so now I have to cover up the opening with some plastic and drive around looking like trash.
I think I’ll go to sleep now...

To be fair, it was probably two or three vials of meth.

Happened to mine earlier in the year.
But yeah, have you considered going through your insurance? My was considered vandalism and only cost me $50.

That blows. I’ve always gone through insurance for windows, no clue where to look for one on the cheap.
When I was living in the ghetto a long term resident taught me “one simple trick” to avoid break ins. Leave a crumpled pack of Newports on the passenger seat. After 3 windows smashed in as many months I went the next 2 years without another one.

I just called the insurance company, but it would require my paying the $500 deductible, something that doesn’t make a lot of sense when I found a place that can install a new window for $257.

I just did that, and got quite lucky. Just across the river from me, probably less than 20 miles away, there’s a yard that’s got a 2014 model with left front damage; the right side is intact. They’re only asking $50 for the part, considerably cheaper than anywhere else.
I don’t know how difficult it is to install a window, but I can’t imagine it being all that tough. Hopefully I can grab that window in the morning and get it installed before the first snow of the season hits tomorrow evening.

Yeah, I don’t see any point in flying off the handle or being all sullen. I did get a free double cheeseburger and fries over at Steak ‘n Shake, followed by a free sandwich at Firehouse, so on the bright side I’m full and I don’t have to cook tonight...

That's why I don't bother locking my doors in sketchy neighborhoods and take my valuables with me. Replacing my window is far more expensive than the $15 in change they'll find.

That’s awful. I’m not used to seeing crooks go through the windshield.
Just be sure to avoid dirt cheap Chinese glass. It will look wavy and super super crappy.
I was shocked when the glass for my C30 was only $25 more for OEM than cheap knockoff stuff.

It wasn’t the windshield, but the passenger door window. It was tinted, so that’s why a majority of the glass is all held together (the one hanging there and the other group on the seat).
I think I’ve found a window just a few miles away at a salvage yard just across the river. For $50 I should be able to get an OEM piece of glass, beating the $197 that the dealer wants. I really don’t have $50 to spare, but I’ll just have to find it somewhere. Meanwhile, three times today when I stopped I had people coming up to me begging for money, and getting rather persistent despite telling them that I’m unemployed, about to get evicted and now have to spend a ton to fix my car.

Back in the 60s Newport’s parent company gave free packs to folks in the projects to get them hooked (they got sued and had to pay damages for it BTW). To this day people in subsidized housing smoke them in high numbers. If you’re in a ghetto area and the thieves see them in your car they figure you live in the projects and you’ve got nothing worth taking so they won’t bust your window and risk getting noticed.
That’s the theory at least.

Seeing things like this makes me thankful I live in one of the safest suburbs of Cleveland. Stay safe my friends.

This incident is nothing compared to what happened ages ago when I lived with my parents. They live in a very nice area (the joke is that the slums in their neighborhood are the houses that are only in the 6-figure range...), but that didn’t stop some twit from attempting to steal my Rabbit pickup. He almost got away with it, but I ran out to stop him and he drove off, through one neighbor’s yard, across the street, through another yard, finally crashing into a garage into the back of a new 7-series. But I suspect that a smash-and-grab here in the city is more common than a car theft in my folk’s neighborhood.
